Best Five Energy Tips for Saving Your Household Budget

When trying to work towards a goal of living debt free, another area to look at would be your energy cost.  When setting up a household budget, it is important to also consider your energy bill because it can often max out a budget if you are not careful. The following five energy tips will help prevent your energy bill from maxing out your household budget in the future.

Energy tip number one is to get in the habit of turning off the lights when leaving the room. As a parent, you may find yourself constantly turning off the lights.  Start teaching your children how important it is to conserve energy and they will soon remember to also turn out the light when they leave a room. Also when a bulb burns out, replace it with florescent bulbs.  These bulbs cost more than the traditional bulbs but they last a lot longer as well as save you money.

Tip number two is to naturally cool and heat your room.  This can be done by letting in the sunshine during the day when it is cool outside or closing out the sun when it gets hot outside.  It is also important that your home is well insulated.  Homes that are well insulated will see a huge difference in the cost of heating and cooling.

Energy Tip number three is to get in the habit of washing a full load of dishes and clothes. Don’t ever start up the dishwasher with just a few dishes but wait until you have a full load and the same thing is true when washing clothes.  Also try setting the water heater at a lower temperature.  This can save on washing dishes and clothes as well as when bathing. Another way to save is to hang the clothes on the line to dry instead of putting them in the dryer.

Tip number four is to turn down the thermostat in the winter to 65 degrees and wear a sweater when you are cool.  During the summer put the thermostat on 80 degrees and have a fan in every room.  By doing this, you can really save on your energy bill when cooling or heating the house.

And energy tip number five is to turn off your computer, television, DVD player and other items that pull energy even when they are not being used.  Get in the habit of turning off your computer before going to bed at night or any other time when not in use.
