Tips for Meal Planning on a Budget
One of the best places to save when you want to reach a now living debt free goal is on food cost. You are probably thinking though that providing healthy meals for your family could be way too difficult when on a budget. But really meal planning on a budget doesn’t have to be all that difficult if you plan a menu for the week and know what items to buy at the grocery store. By doing this, you might not only be cutting back on your food budget but also be trimming down your waistline too. The following are some tips for meal planning on a budget.
First off figure out how much money a month that you can allow for food cost and then divide that by the four weeks to determine how much you can spend each week. In setting up this food budget, be sure to include the nonfood items that you normally buy such as laundry detergent and paper items.
Before heading off to the grocery store, you should plan a menu for the week and determine what items you need to buy. Never go to the grocery store when hungry because you certainly will purchase items that are not on your shopping list. Be sure to use any food items that you already have stocked in your panty and take advantage of using any leftovers for future lunches or another meal later on in the week.
Another great tip for meal planning on a budget is to start clipping coupons. Only use coupons though which are for items that can be used in your menu for that week or future meals that month. Never use a coupon unless it will save you money on the items that you would normally buy. You might find also that the store brand version is cheaper than the name brand items that you normally buy. It is important that you do a price comparison on the store’s version to the name brand to see if there is a savings.
Instead of eating out for lunch while at work, start packing a lunch. This is a great way to save on the grocery bill as well as use up any leftovers from the night before. Eat out less and start cooking more at home to save on food cost. Meal planning on a budget can be done but only if you start planning your menus before ever going to the store. And also never go to the grocery store without a grocery list. This will keep you from overspending and stay within your budget.
