Tips for Frugal Grocery Shopping

In your quest to living debt free, are you being frugal when it comes to grocery shopping? Regardless of what our financial situation is, you and your family will still need to eat.  But frugal grocery shopping can be accomplished though by not having to sacrifice a lot in order to save money at the grocery store.  This all starts first by doing a little planning before heading off to the store.

Before going to the grocery store, you first need to take an inventory of your pantry to decide exactly what you need at the store. If you are like me, you probably have items in your pantry that you forgot you even had.  Maybe it was an ingredient for a recipe you had planned on making but instead went out to eat that night or cooked something else for that meal.  Regardless, you first need to take a complete inventory of your panty to determine what is on the shelves.  There should staple items in the pantry that everyone should have regardless of what meal you plan to fix.

Then the next step to do frugal grocery shopping would be to make out a menu plan for that week. Also check the grocery ads to see if there is anything on sale that week such as the staple items or ingredients that you can use in the menu plan. By using what is already in the pantry along with any items on sale, you can then decide what you need to purchase for that week. Then once you have a menu plan for the week, write down all that you need to buy at the grocery store.

Never go to the grocery store without some sort of idea of what you need to buy.  If you go to the grocery store without any sort of list then you will be just wondering around the store and will be tempted to buy items just because the packaging looked appealing.  This is definitely not the way to be frugal when it comes to grocery shopping. If you make out a grocery list, then be sure to follow it and don’t be tempted to impulse buy. When something is on sale, make sure that in fact it is a good deal.  Don’t just buy an item because it is on sale because that would defeat the purpose of doing frugal grocery shopping.

During the week, be sure to avoid stopping off at any of those convenience stores because you will certainly pay a much higher price than what you would pay at the grocery store.  Convenience stores are notorious for jacking the price up.

Frugal grocery shopping will pay off in the long run because it will save you money. Besides that you and your family will also be a lot healthier because you have stopped purchasing the convenience foods and instead are now preparing more wholesome meals.
